Short answer
On our semi-private catamarans the day and sunset cruises stop at the same places, so you choose the time of day, not the route. The day cruise (10:00, about 4.5 hours) has the strongest light and calmer morning water and leaves your evening free. The sunset cruise (15:00, about 5.5 hours) is an hour longer and ends with the sunset from the sea.
- Day cruise
- 10:00 · about 4.5 hours
- Sunset cruise
- 15:00 · about 5.5 hours
- Stops
- The same on both
- Guests
- Up to 20
It is the question our team at Vista Yachting in Santorini hears most before a booking. Most people expect the two cruises to be different trips. On our boat tours they are not: the Gold and Platinum cruises keep the same stops in the morning and in the afternoon. What changes is the light, the heat, the sea and what is left of your day.
Same route, different time of day
Both catamaran cruises leave from Vlychada Marina on a Lagoon 450F or 52 with up to 20 guests, and both include hotel pickup, the BBQ on board and the drinks.
| Day cruise | Sunset cruise | |
|---|---|---|
| Starts | 10:00 | 15:00 |
| Length | About 4.5 hours | About 5.5 hours |
| Swim stops | Gold: Red Beach, hot springs, Mesa Pigadia. Platinum: Mesa Pigadia, hot springs, Thirassia | The same stops |
| Light | Bright and clear, strongest around midday | Warm and low, golden in the last hour |
| Sea | Usually calmest in the morning | Livelier on the way back on windy summer days |
| Your evening | Free for dinner or the sunset from Oia | Spent on the boat |
The difference between Gold and Platinum is the route, not the time of day. Gold has its swim and lunch stop at Mesa Pigadia; Platinum adds Thirassia island for the swim and lunch, with a seafood linguine and beer on the menu.

When the day cruise is the better choice
Pick the morning if the water is the point of the day. The sea is usually at its flattest in the morning, especially in July and August when the meltemi wind tends to build after lunch. Snorkelling is clearer in strong light, and you can see the colours of Red Beach and the caldera cliffs properly.
You are back at your hotel by mid-afternoon, so the evening stays free. With only one or two nights on the island, that matters: you can do the cruise in the morning and still watch the sunset from Oia or a caldera restaurant that night.
The morning also suits families with young children, who have the most energy early and are back in time for a rest. Our guide to choosing a boat for a family trip goes into this in more detail.
When the sunset cruise is the better choice
Pick the afternoon for the atmosphere. The light turns golden over the caldera, the BBQ comes off the grill and the sun goes down while you are on the water rather than in a crowd on an Oia terrace. For couples, honeymoons and birthdays, this is the one guests remember.
The sunset cruise is also an hour longer, so you get the same swims plus the sunset. The trade-off is your evening: in peak summer you are back at the port after dark, so plan dinner for another night. In July and August bring a light layer for the ride home, when the wind picks up.

Sunset time by month
The sunset cruise leaves at 15:00 for most of the season, so how much of the evening light you get depends on the month. These are sunset times for the 15th of each month in Santorini, local time. For today’s exact time, see Santorini sunset time.
| Month | Sunset | What it means on board |
|---|---|---|
| April | 19:52 | Sunset comes near the end of the cruise; bring a warm layer |
| May | 20:17 | Golden light on the way back; evenings are still cool on the water |
| June | 20:37 | The latest sunsets of the year, close to the end of the cruise |
| July | 20:36 | Late sunset and the strongest afternoon wind; a windbreaker helps |
| August | 20:08 | Warm evenings; the sea is at its warmest for the swims |
| September | 19:25 | Sunset well inside the cruise, with warm sea and fewer boats |
| October | 18:42 | Early, soft light; both cruises work well this month |
Is a Santorini sunset cruise worth it?
For most guests, yes, as long as you know what to expect. You get the same swims as on the day cruise, the BBQ and the sunset from the water, away from the crowds on the Oia terraces. You will not have the sea to yourselves: in summer many boats are out in the late afternoon, and the sunset itself lasts only a few minutes. On a windy July or August evening the ride back can be choppy and cool.
It is worth it if the sunset is the moment you came to Santorini for, if you are celebrating something, or if you only have one evening and would rather spend it on the water. It is less worth it with very young children, if you get seasick easily, or if you have already booked a caldera dinner for sunset that night. In those cases the day cruise gives you the same swims and a free evening.
Which one fits your trip
- Couples and honeymoons: the sunset cruise.
- Families with young children: the day cruise, back before the afternoon heat and tiredness.
- Swimmers and snorkellers: the day cruise, for the calmest water and clearest light.
- Photographers: the day cruise for colour and detail on the cliffs, the sunset cruise for silhouettes and warm light.
- Cruise-ship passengers: the day cruise, so you are not racing the last tender back.
- Only one or two nights in Santorini: the day cruise, then the sunset from land the same evening.
- Can’t decide: the sunset cruise gives you the same swims plus an extra hour and the sunset.
For a group that wants its own timing, a private cruise can leave when you like and stay longer where you like.
